A Brief about BRC (British Retail Consortium)

BRC is one of the leading trade associations in the United Kingdom. They represent 80% of retail trade in the UK by turnover and all forms of retailers from small, independently owned stores to big chain stores and department stores. There are about four to five BRC Standards but the most commonly used standards are as follows:

BRC Global Standard for Food Safety
This Standard is closely managed by the BRC who license the use of the Standard to Certification Bodies. Certification Bodies or Conformity Assessment Bodies must be both accredited by their national Accreditation Body and abide by strict BRC requirements for auditor competency, reporting and performance.

The BRC/IOP Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials
This standard provides focus on quality and functional aspects of packaging which complement the established requirements of factory or manufacturing facility hygiene. A greater emphasis has been on maintaining its versatility in food and non-food packaging. Certification to this standard verifies technical and functional performance, fulfillment of legal obligations and helps provide protection to the consumer.
